<Block Out the Chaos> 캠페인은 홍콩 JBL이 의뢰한 프로젝트였다.

⦁ Fearless Girl

<Fearless Girl>은 2014년 하비 니콜스(Harvey Nichols)의 <Sorry, I Spent it on Myself>와 더불어 칸 라이언즈에서 4개의 그랑프리를 수상한 유일한 캠페인이다.

⦁ Meet Graham

⦁ We’re the Superhumans
<We’re the Superhumans>는 모든 면에서 엄청나며, 재미있고, 마법 같다.

As Spidey’s uncle might say, the privilege of judging also comes with great responsibility.

You judged at Cannes this year. How was it?

It was an incredible privilege. It’s one of the highest professional honours you can receive in our industry. The Cannes Lions Festival is one of the few creative award shows that still matters, with a Cannes Lion now one of the most coveted trophies to win.

It carries a lot of weight on the global stage and gets talked about more than most other shows. And not just in creative circles. Nowadays, even clients drop ‘Cannes’ into their sentences and talk about their hunger to win a Lion.

But as Spidey’s uncle might say, the privilege of judging also comes with great responsibility. After all, we owe it to our industry to pick the work that represents the very best of our fieldand to maintain that rarefied standard that makes Cannes so special. Judging is also the only thing that comes close to winning a Cannes Lion, because you get to decide who wins one. Thankfully, we managed to win some Lions this year too. So that was the icing on the proverbial cake.

So tell us about your Cannes-winning campaign.

The project was commissioned by JBL in Hong Kong. And our mission was to promote its noise-cancelling headphones to a wider audience—and help the brand stand out in a fiercely competitive market. Our print and poster campaign (called “Block Out The Chaos”) uses clever optical illusions to get the message across.

The first ad features beautifully-crafted illustrations of two crying babies, fighting and screaming into the ears of their mother. But she has a calm expression on her face. The negative white space between the kids and the mother forms the silhouette of JBL headphones to block out the noise.

Similarly, the second ad features a man between his wife and daughter who are fighting over a hairdryer.

The third ad shows a boy sandwiched between two loud barking dogs, fighting over a bone. All three ads in the campaign won Lions in both the ‘Print’ and ‘Outdoor’ categories this year.

Which campaigns inspired you at Cannes?

It’s been an epic year for work that makes us feel inspired and insanely jealous. Having already judged at D&AD and One Show this year, I had a pretty good sense of what would win big at Cannes. And true to form, three of my pre-festival favourites went all the way:

⦁ FEARLESS GIRL
The little girl on Wall Street deservedly swept across multiple categories—winning four Grand Prix Lions and 18 Lions in total. Created for State Street Global Advisors by McCann New York to highlight gender diversity, the clever placement of Fearless Girl in front of the iconic Charging Bull gave New York its biggest public art controversy in years.

It’s provocative, progressive and perfectly in-tune with culture. It was a massive catalyst for conversation around the world, and its impact is still being felt. Fearless Girl went on to become one of only two campaigns ever to have won four Grand Prix at Cannes, with the other being Harvey Nichols’ “Sorry, I Spent it on Myself” in 2014.

The festival’s most honoured campaign ever was 2013’s viral hit “Dumb Ways to Die”—created by McCann Melbourne—which racked up five Grand Prix.

⦁ MEET GRAHAM
Another catalyst for conversation was Graham, the only human designed to survive a car crash—created for the Transport Accident Commission by Clemenger BBDO Melbourne.  Part interactive sculpture, part educational tool, it’s an incredibly powerful idea that comes completely out of leftfield.

It’s courageous, visually striking, and once you see it, you can’t unsee it. And that’s the point. This grotesque superhuman had serious momentum on its side and took home 29 Lions, including a Cyber Grand Prix, Health & Wellness Grand Prix and eight Gold Lions.

⦁ WE’RE THE SUPERHUMANS
When Channel 4 introduced their original Grand Prix-winning ‘Superhumans’ back in 2012, you’d think they’d be hard stretched to follow it up.

But they did. ‘We’re the Superhumans’ is epic, joyous and magical in every sense. From the production and editing to the casting and music, it’s a flawless masterpiece. Surprisingly, it lost out on the Grand Prix in Film Craft. But it still took home multiple Golds and the highly-coveted Film Grand Prix.

Did you notice any trends?

There’s definitely a trend back towards meticulously crafting the work. This wasn’t evident across the board, but certainly in the top pieces. A great idea is a given. But over and above that, impeccable craft can be the difference. John Hegarty once said that great work is 80% idea, 80% craft. Go figure.

Why does creativity matter?

Aside from helping us win metals, woods and papers at global award shows, creativity is a game changer. This is true in advertising, in business, in society and in life. Besides, isn’t that what clients are paying us for?

Our business is driven by the very product we call creativity. Without it, there is nothing. I’m still proud of the fact that I’m paid to have an imagination. To think laterally. And solve problems. I still love being creative and the thrill of cracking something. I hope that never disappears.

What inspires you?

Apart from listening to vinyl records and eating marmite on toast, it can be anything and everything. It’s hard to list because it’s usually things that you can’t predict that are the most inspiring. I mean, we look for inspiration everywhere and in everything we do. Especially when staring at a blank layout pad.

What frustrates you?

Inflated titles. In Asia, it’s a common joke that you’ll find more CDs in an ad agency than at HMV. And we all know what happened to them…
