뿐만 아니라 레드닷에서 최우수상(Best of the Best), 브론즈, 실버, 피플스 러비 어워드(People’s Lovie Awards), 크리스탈 페스티벌(Cristal Festival) 그랑프리를 수상했으며, 특히 이번 그랑프리는 삼성 독일법인의 최초의 그랑프리였다.

In Germany, as in many other countries all over Europe, diversity and unity have been under attack since 2015. In this particular climate, the timeframe of Samsung’s biggest all-year event in 2017 – the world’s largest Electronics Consumer Trade Show IFA in Berlin – also coincided with the run-up to the national elections as well as the annual national day of re-unification.

That’s why the brand decided to set an example and support all Germans who represent a modern, colourful, and inclusive society. Taking a visible stand against newly rising populism, it wanted to prove that while we can be wildly different, we can always understand each other. Applying innovation, playfulnesss and creative self-expression, Samsung championed its cause for unity, diversity and inclusiveness in a manner that fitted the brand and empowered the individual consumer – with emojis.

Emojis are the world’s new universal language, transcending borders and cultures. Encouraging and helping users to make emojis on their smartphone as personal and diverse as possible, the user-generated, personalized emojis served as a message for and proof of diversity in German society, shared and distributed in countless chats.

The “Samsung Land of Emojis” campaign launched via a print ad in Germany’s largest newspaper, BILD, and posts on Samsung’s Facebook channel, which directed the audience to the campaign website and to download the innovative mobile app. Interactive displays and public installations in Germany’s capital, Berlin, amplified the online-campaign in a second phase.

The mobile app was the first of its kind in combining facial recognition with an algorithm to turn any selfie into a full set of emojis which then were accessible in any standard messenger – not only in proprietary apps like Snapchat. The facial recognition in combination with an extensive database of highly customized visual assets made it easy for users to start using their own personalized emojis sets, promoting diversity with every chat or posting. But the brand activation was deliberately not limited to Samsung or Android smartphone users; even iPhone owners could generate their personal emoji via the mobile campaign website.

The interactive digital billboards in highly frequented areas of Berlin further engaged the audience by connecting smartphones via mobile installations to show personal emojis and encouraging chat messages in real time to the public.

But what resonated the most, was when Samsung took the emojis not only to the streets of Berlin on the national “Day of German Unity” but brought them together on the Brandenburg Gate. Usually not available to commercial brands, the Brandenburg Gate is one of Germany’s most historical and popular landmarks and an icon for the country’s Reunification. In a spectacular, dynamically rendered 3D projection-mapping light show, all user-generated emojis were projected onto the Brandenburg Gate creating a powerful new symbol of German diversity, visible and instantly shared across the world.

Samsung Land of Emojis in numbers:

• Total media impressions: 67 million
• Social reach: 20 million
• App downloads during campaign activation: over 41.000
• Unique emojis created by users: 700.000+
• Market share increase during campaign period: 7%

Apart from being Samsung Germany’s most successful brand activation so far, the campaign also has won numerous national and international awards including Best of the Best at Red Dot, a Bronze, Silver and two People’s Lovie Awards, and a Grand Prix at Cristal Festival – the first Grand Prix for Cheil Germany ever.
